I have a 03 intrepid, in gear with brake applied and stopped the idle will slowly drop to 600 rpm's and the oil light comes on. put it in nuetral and it goes out as soon as rpm's go around 750? WTF? Help, is it the oil pump?Intrepid oil light at idle in gear comes on.?
that may also be the oil pump pick up tube getting stopped up on it and causing that too happen, first see if you can get someone with a manual gage to try and see how much oil pressure its actually holding, then if that doesn't help, replace the sending unit on it,as a last resort you may have to pull the oil pan and clean it all out ,those was bad to stop up and cause that problem too happen,i got an 02 model to do this week for the same problem and we already determined its the oil pan full of sludge causing this too happen, try the sending unit first though its a lot cheaper and easier than removing the oil pan and cleaning it all out,and that could be the pressure relief valve in the oil pump going bad also, good luck.Intrepid oil light at idle in gear comes on.?
Most likely the oil pressure sending unit connector needs to modified. There is a technical service bulletin for this problem. Most Chrysler and Dodge dealers can fix it for $60-100 in less than an hour. I doubt it is your pump or pickup, unless you don't change the oil often or it is over 150,000 miles.
It is possible you have a bad oil pump, but you may want to check the oil strainer to make sure it is not partially clogged up. I worked on one with similar problems and it was a clogged oil strainer.
Spend a few bucks to get the pressure checked with a remote gauge at a repair shop. If the sender is just defective, it will be an easy fix. If the pressure really is low, you ain't gonna like the repair cost, I promise.
