My 4hp Evinrude stays in gear and will not go into neutral after changing the gearbox lube oil. suggestions?

One of the screws that you mistakenly removed is the pivot pin for the gear shift fork. It fell out of position and when you put the screw back in.......well you get the idea. It it a little more complicated to put it back in position......You can buy a shop manual, but a good mechanic will find this funny and laugh as he puts it back and charges you to do it.My 4hp Evinrude stays in gear and will not go into neutral after changing the gearbox lube oil. suggestions?
couple things we need to know first.

1. Is this your first time to change gear lube? First time on this motor?

2. What year motor?

3. Was there any metal in the old oil?

4. Was there any water in the old oil?

5. Need a more specific description of the symptoms. What action are you taking, and what is the response. I mean, does the shift lever move from forward to neutral, but the motor is still in gear? Or is the shift lever frozen up to where you can't move it?

6. How did you determine that it's still in gear? Is it cause the prop spins when the motors running out of the water? or something else?My 4hp Evinrude stays in gear and will not go into neutral after changing the gearbox lube oil. suggestions?
Become more proficient with throttle, kill switch, and pulling starter rope. Remove any stop tabs that prevent rotating the motor 360 degree on transom.
