hello jimmy my name is Shaun I'm a mechanic, if it is your gear box then am afraid the damage is done, but if your lucky it might just be a drive shaft that's away! dose the engine rev when you put it in gear? and what way did the car break down did it just lose speed and start reving or did the wheels lock up?

If it is a fluid problem and is low on fluid I am afraid you are up the creek. Once you run an automatic out of fluid the clutch bands inside the tranny will burn up in just a few minutes. If for some reason it is something else you are in luck. To check and see if you burnt the clutches up remove the rubber plug and smell the scent of the oil just sniff it. If the clutches are burnt up you will smell the scent kind of like brake pads that got too hot. If you smell that it's toast. Good Luck I hope it's something else other than the fluid.
it sounds more like the torque converter than oil to me.get an auto gearbox specailist to have a look.
