the smell is so bad. it about knocks you out when the car door gets opened. a Friend of mine gave me her old car after getting a new one. it had been sitting in her yard for about a year, it use full Of a bunch of stuff. under it all i found a can of gear oil. the carpet under can was wet and the smell 'was unbearable . does anyone know how to get rid of it???? the car runs great but i cant drive it it makes me SICK!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!GEAR OIL , PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!?
Yeah, that stuff does stink. Short of ripping out the carpet, try some cat litter to absorb it out of the carpet. I've seen some brand advertised on TV that has a pleasant scent to it might be best. Then after that, maybe some FeBreeze.GEAR OIL , PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!?
Fresh Step is the name of the Cat Litter I was thinking of. Report Abuse
B4 you go crazy spending money on anew interior try dawn dish soap take a bucket full of water and put a whole bottle of dawn in it, pour the whole bucket on the gear oil and let it sit over night, scrub with all your might the next day and then suck up the residue with a shop vac.Saturate with febreeze and leave the windows open to air dry
try to get most of the gear oil picked up as much as possible, then put charcoal in a paper bag with the top of the bag open and place in side of the car and the charcoal will remove the oder, they use charcoal to get the smell of smoke out of houses that have caught fire,so should work for you too...
very hard to get out. usually when i get some on a work shirt i end up throwing it out. try using the industrial strength turtle wax carpet cleaner with oxy foam. also...brake cleaner in the aerosol can is extremely strong and is very good at breaking down grease and oil. with this method, i would spray the area and immediately blot it up with a towel. you might have to replace the carpet if that doesnt work.
this is just my experience====my dad gave me his old boat. just before he gave it to me, a full gallon can of outboard motor oil was punctured and the carpet saturated. I can relate to the smell. only thing that solved the problem was to rip out all the carpet.
wish I had a better answer.
Gear oil will etch into the metal of the vehicle. Try a degreaser or similar, but be aware that the degreaser may be just as bad smelling.
